Now on Walmart.com

I’m excited to announce that the print editions of my novels are now available on Walmart.com.

Kyle Pratt with the four novels now on Walmart.com

Since writing is my business I work hard to expand the distribution of my stories, but I didn’t have anything to do with the addition of Walmart distribution. I didn’t even realize my books were on Walmart.com until a fellow author mentioned that their books were. So I checked.

Imagine my surprise.

From what I’m hearing from other authors this is all due to an agreement between Amazon and Walmart. I'm just thankful it happened.

At least for now, Walmart.com is only selling print books, not audio or ebooks. The four novels that are available on Walmart.com are Through Many Fires, A Time to Endure, Braving the Storms and Titan Encounter.

Long Way to a New Release

When I began writing The Long Way Home I planned on it being a novelette of about 8,000 words.

Sometimes a story has a mind of its own. The completed manuscript turned into a 21,000 word novella.

As with Nightmare in Slow Motion, readers of the Strengthen What Remains novels have seen part of the story, and many have asked me to fill in the blanks. The Long Way Home takes place as chapters eight through twenty-two unfold in the novel Through Many Fires.

This story focuses on Trevor, the father of Caden Westmore. Five cities had already been decimated by nuclear terrorism when Trevor sets out on a mission to bring Sue, his pregnant daughter-in-law, back to the relative safety of the family farm. He also hopes to find his daughter Lisa and bring her home. But, almost immediately upon finding Sue, in the suburbs of Seattle, terrorists detonate another nuclear bomb and the two must flee amid the chaos and fallout.

It took me much longer than expected to write, but it was released earlier today and is available on Amazon, Kobo and Smashwords. The novella will be available soon on other sites. Readers, let me know what you think, and please review the book. Thanks!

Book Credits

How many people does it take to create a novel?

Braving the Storms, by Kyle Pratt

Recently I watched X-Men Apocalypse with one of my sons. At the end of the action we waited to see if there were any post-credit scenes (there is). As we watched the endless scroll of credits we discussed how many people were involved in the production of my last novel, Braving the Storms.

Over the next few days I jotted down names of people who either worked for me on the novel, or volunteered their time. I hope I didn’t forget to include someone on the list below.

This doesn’t include people working for distributors such as, Amazon, Nook and iTunes, or the numerous bloggers and reviewers that I speak with on a regular basis.

While my list isn’t nearly as long as the movie credits, it still includes a lot of people, and I’m grateful to every one of them.

Coming Soon

A new book and a new edition are coming soon.

The new book

The Long Way Home by Kyle Pratt

The final book in the Strengthen What Remains series, at least for now, is the 20,000 word novella, The Long Way Home. The story will be released on July 15th, but is available for preorder on Amazon and Smashwords, and will soon be available on Nook and Kobo.

Five cities had already been decimated by nuclear terrorism when Trevor Westmore sets out on a mission to bring Sue, his pregnant daughter-in-law, back to the relative safety of the family farm. He also hopes to find his daughter Lisa and bring her home. But, almost immediately upon finding Sue, in the suburbs of Seattle, terrorists detonate another nuclear bomb and the two must flee amid the chaos and fallout.

The Omnibus Edition

The Strengthen What Remains omnibus edition by Kyle Pratt

The Strengthen What Remains omnibus edition is scheduled for release on August 26. This ebook only edition will include the three novels, Through Many Fires, A Time to Endure, and Braving the Storms. Also included is the novelette, Nightmare in Slow Motion and the yet to be released novella, The Long Way Home, described above. While the final price has not been set, the plan is to save readers money over buying the books individually. A pre-order page will be created later this month.

Nightmare Novelette

My latest release can best be described as a “sidequel.”

Sidequel isn’t a real word, not yet anyway, but it’s the best way to describe Nightmare in Slow Motion, my just released 12,000 word novelette in the Strengthen What Remains series. This story unfolds at the same time, or alongside, the first chapters of Through Many Fires.

Nightmare in Slow Motion by Kyle Pratt

Peter Westmore is the older brother of Caden and a police officer helping with the evacuation of Seattle when terrorists explode a nuclear bomb. In my novel A Time to Endure we glimpse the end of Peter’s life. In that novel his brother Caden is on a mission to destroy gangs and terrorists living on the fringe of the Seattle blast zone. During the fighting, Caden goes to his older brother’s abandoned home and discovers Peter’s body and two letters. The contents of one are revealed in A Time to Endure. The other is not. Nightmare in Slow Motions fills in the blanks of Peter’s last days.

Nightmare in Slow is Motion available in ebook format on Amazon, Nook, Kobo, Google Play, and Smashwords.

Backdoor Book Festival

Backdoor Survival has featured my books before.

This month, Backdoor Survival, one of the top survival and prepping websites, featured my latest novel, Braving the Storms, and they’ve highlighted my books before.

In early 2014, Through Many Fires had begun to sell and I knew that if I found bloggers and reviewers willing to read my book, I could reach an even wider audience. At the time I still taught in Alaska, and wrote in my spare time.

I sent an email to Gaye Levy, founder and editor of Backdoor Survival, and she agreed to read Through Many Fires. Gaye featured the novel in the Backdoor Survival Spring 2014 book festival. With help from her, Through Many Fires reached that wider audience. In 2015, Gaye featured my novel A Time to Endure, in another website book festival

Book Festival and Giveaway

My debt to Gaye continues to grow. Earlier this week in her eleventh online book festival, Backdoor Survival featured Braving the Storms. Along with the review there is an interview with me, and a chance to win one of ten copies of Braving the Storms. The winners can choose their format: print book, eBook, or audiobook.

So, click here to go straight to the Braving the Storms page at Backdoor Survival, read the interview, and enter.

New Audiobook Release!

The Braving the Storms audiobook is now available.

Braving the Storms audiobook by Kyle Pratt

Narration and production of the audiobook edition of Braving the Storms took less than a month. Even the Audible quality review seemed to go quicker than it had in the past. I certainly expected everything to go smoothly with the talented Kevin Pierce behind the project. This is Kevin’s third production for me and my fifth audiobook overall.

The unabridged audio production of Braving the Storms is eight hours and eleven minutes long. It is currently available through Amazon and Audible and will soon be on iTunes.

You can see all of my audiobooks here, on my website.

Three in the Top Ten

Three of my novels are simultaneous bestsellers

Kyle Pratt holds the Strengthen What Remains series

All three of my Strengthen What Remains novels have reached the Amazon War Fiction top ten bestseller list at the same time. Braving the Storms, my latest novel is at number eight. Through Many Fires, the first novel in the series is in the number five position, and A Time to Endure has reached the number one spot.

Currently, we’re promoting A Time to Endure, so I expected it to move up in the ranks and, of course, I hoped that it would reach number one. What I didn’t expect is for people to buy the other two books at the same time, and have all three in the top ten this morning.

Thank you, everyone, who bought the books, reviewed them and helped spread the word. This is a great start to 2016.

Great Release

Braving the Storms is off to a good start.

With the holidays I’ve been slow to write anything, except Christmas cards, but this deserves mention. The release of Braving the Storms, the third book in the Strengthen What Remains series, was released on December 18th. By the next day the book surged onto the Amazon war fiction best seller list and reached number 77 later in the day.

What thrilled me about the early sales was we hadn’t started any paid advertising yet. Braving the Storms made it to the best seller lists based on the support from fans of the earlier books. Thank you!

This is the Day

Today Braving the Storms was released worldwide!

I was barely out of bed this morning when my wife Lorraine said, “Check your sales—how many books have you sold?” Braving the Storms, the third book in my Strengthen What Remains series, released worldwide this morning as an ebook.

Kyle Pratt with the three books of the Strengthen What Remains series

If you pre-ordered it on Amazon, Kobo or Smashwords the book should be on your device. By the time you read this it should be available on Barnes & Noble (Nook), and iTunes.

The paperback also released this morning, but will take a while to show up on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

So, I told Lorraine about the sales and was hoping for a quiet extended weekend leading up to Christmas. Then I remembered that Kevin Pierce, the narrator for both Through Many Fires and A Time to Endure, still needed the Braving the Storms manuscript. I emailed the script to him and we formalized the production agreement. The audiobook should be available by late January.

After that I recalled the newsletter for my readers still hadn’t been sent. Many of them had been waiting since the release of A Time to Endure. They deserved to be told that the next book in the series had been release. Then I needed to update the blog …

Maybe I can take tomorrow off.

Braving the Storms Update

The latest paperback copy of Braving the Storms is ready for release!

I received the proof copy of my latest novel today. The copy is identical to what readers get when they order the book and is my last chance to make changes before the release.

Kyle Pratt with the proof copy of Braving the Storms

After this picture was taken my wife sat down and proofed the book. She checks it page-by-page for errors. At this point we’re not looking for manuscript errors so much, as style and format errors, such as incorrect margins, wrong type fonts or pages numbered incorrectly. I’ll check it too, but she is better at proofing the books than I am.

The ebook edition of Braving the Storms is ready and, as long as we don’t find any problems, the paperback edition will go to press tonight. Both editions will be released worldwide on December 18th. Production of the audiobook will begin after Christmas with a release date sometime in late January.

This is an exciting Christmas season!

Getting Closer to Release

Next Friday is the big day!

I’ve been working on Braving the Storms for over a year, writing, rewriting and editing all of the nearly 78,000 words. My wife has read each of the forty chapters at least twice. Micah Hansen worked with me to create the covers, while others have worked as critique partners and beta-readers. So, I’m really excited to say that the manuscript is done!

Braving the Storms by Kyle Pratt

Braving the Storms, is the third book of the Strengthen What Remains series. In the first book, Through Many Fires, nuclear terrorism strikes the nation’s capital and six other American cities. In the second book, A Time to Endure, society continues to unravel, and civil war threatens the divided and economically-crippled land.

Now a new and even more lethal problem emerges. A swift and deadly flu epidemic sweeps out of overcrowded FEMA camps and strikes the nation with horrific results. Caden Westmore struggles to keep his family and community safe, while others use the plague to advance their own military and political agendas. Caden must succeed, but how can he, when both the epidemic and chaos attack his hometown and family?

Now the harder job begins, getting the word out to readers about the new book. The paperback and ebook editions will be released worldwide on December 18th. Production of the audiobook will begin after Christmas with a release date sometime in late January.

Special Discount

The release date for braving the storms is only 56 days away!

As part of the celebration leading up to the release of Braving the Storms on December 18th, I’ve marked down the first book in the series, Through Many Fires, to 99 cents.

In Through Many Fires, terrorists smuggle a nuclear bomb into Washington D.C. and detonate it during the State of the Union address. Army veteran and congressional staffer, Caden Westmore, watches as a mushroom cloud grows over the capital. The next day as he drives away from the still burning city, he learns another city has been destroyed, and then another. America is under siege. Panic ensues and society begins to unravel.

I don’t know how long the book will be available at that very special price, but the goal is that everyone who wants to start reading the series can do so now, before the release of Braving the Storms. So, if you haven’t read the novel, now is the time to snag your copy!

The ebook version of Through Many Fires is available on Nook, Kobo iTunes, Smashwords and on Amazon sites, in the U.S., Canada, Britain and Australia.

Growing Reach

I received a surprising email recently.

Since I started, I’ve felt that the best way to promote and sell my books was online. While I’m thrilled when it occurs, I put little effort into getting them into stores and libraries. Still, over time, they have appeared in several brick and mortar establishments like the Strand in New York City, Powell’s in Portland, and my local store, Book N Brush.

So, perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised when my friend and fellow author Jennifer Vandenberg sent me these pictures. She was visiting the local Chehalis library and found the book just as you see it in the picture.

I went to the library the next day and talked with the only person I know working there, Amy Flugel. She checked the catalog and informed me the regional library system three copies of A Time to Endure, all checked out, and three more of Through Many Fires at other libraries.

So, thanks to someone in the Timberland Regional Library system, the reach of my books continues to grow.

Amazon Amuses

All I can do is smile when Amazon tries to sell me one my own books.

This happens more often than you might think. Every few days I go and check each of my books to see if there are new reviews and to ensure everything on the page is correct and working. Usually, I’m on the page for less than a minute, but Amazon takes this as interest in the book.

So, about once a month I get an email trying to sell me one or more of my paperbacks, ebooks or audiobooks. I have no idea why Amazon thought I might want the middle book.

A Great Complement

The editor of Backdoor Survival compares A Time to Endure to Patriots.

It amazes me how often events in life come in pairs. A few days ago I discovered that New York Times best-selling author, and the editor of SurvivalBlog, James Wesley Rawles recommended my novel, Through Many Fires.

A Time to Endure, by Kyle Pratt and Patriots, by James Wesley Rawles

Then Gaye Levy, editor of Backdoor Survival, one of the top survival and preparedness websites, reviewed A Time to Endure, the sequel to Through Many Fires and compared it favorably to Patriots, the first of a five book series, by Rawles. While the series as a whole has been well received the first novel, Patriots, has achieved a cult-like following in the prepper community.

A Time to Endure Compares to Patriots

In the review she states, “Halfway through (A Time to Endure) a lightbulb went off in my head. The...lessons I was learning not only rivaled those in Rawles’ Patriots, but they were kinder, gentler and less militaristic, in nature.” She goes on to say, “Whether you are new to the genre and to prepping, or an old pro like me, consider adding this book to your collection. You will not be disappointed.”

I’m grateful for the review and humbled by the comparison.

Interview and Review

The editor of Backdoor Survival, Gaye Levy, recently interviewed me and reviewed my latest book, A Time to Endure.

Backdoor Survival is a top ranked survival and preparedness website.

The site provides lifestyle tools, tips, and resources to guide readers through the economic, political, environmental challenges we all face. Because of my own interest in survival and prepping, I’ve visited Backdoor Survival many times. Even before the release of my first survival themed book I was a regular visitor. However, when I released Through Many Fires, it seemed only natural to send a copy to Gaye.

She was kind enough to review the book and interview me. Then she made Through Many Fires part of the Backdoor Survival Book Festival for the Spring of 2014.

This year as part of the website’s Prepper Book Festival, the second book in the series, A Time to Endure, is featured. In the second book, A Time to Endure, the nation’s economy teeters on the verge of collapse. The dollar plunges, inflation runs rampant, and the next civil war threatens to decimate the wounded country. In the face of tyranny, panic, and growing hunger, Caden struggles to keep his family and town together and alive, but how can he when the nation is collapsing around them?

I found the comments below from Gaye’s recent review to be very kind and humbling.

“At some point you might be scratching your head and thinking, how the heck does Gaye read all of these books? One a week? Holy moly!

“The truth of the matter is that sometimes I read just a few chapters and other times I do a quick skim. After all, I do need to preview these books to ensure they are suitable to Backdoor Survival readers. A few, however, I read cover to cover, or if I can, listen via audiobook.

“Kyle’s books are the cover-to-cover type. I know you will enjoy both Through Many Fires and A Time to Endure. Just don’t blame me if you are sleepy the next the day for staying up to all hours reading! One other thing. Kyle’s books are some of the most reasonably priced books in the post-apocalyptic genre on Amazon.”

Thank you, Gaye.

First Sale

Book three of the Strengthen What Remains series is off to a good start.

Kyle Pratt and and Bill Radtke with the check for book 3.

I haven’t finished the novel or even named it yet, but I’ve sold at least one copy.

Bill Radtke, a friend of mine, is a busy man, and has little time to read for entertainment, but he recently bought paperback copies of both Through Many Fires and A Time to Endure. While we talked he asked me about the third book. I told him that I haven’t come up with a title yet, but otherwise it was coming along fine. I’ve written about 15,000 words and plotted out most of the novel. (You can track my progress on the book here.)

As Bill wrote the check for the first two books he said, “I’m going to add extra for the third book."

I told him it wasn’t necessary, that I would make sure he got a copy, but he insisted. The more I thought about it, the more I enjoyed the idea of selling a book I haven’t finished or even named, so I asked him to pose for this picture with me.

Bill, I hope you enjoy Through Many Fires and A Time to Endure and I will personally deliver your signed first edition copy of the third book (whatever it ends up being called) as soon as they are available.
