Braving the Storms Update

The latest paperback copy of Braving the Storms is ready for release!

I received the proof copy of my latest novel today. The copy is identical to what readers get when they order the book and is my last chance to make changes before the release.

After this picture was taken my wife sat down and proofed the book. She checks it page-by-page for errors. At this point we’re not looking for manuscript errors so much, as style and format errors, such as incorrect margins, wrong type fonts or pages numbered incorrectly. I’ll check it too, but she is better at proofing the books than I am.

The ebook edition of Braving the Storms is ready and, as long as we don’t find any problems, the paperback edition will go to press tonight. Both editions will be released worldwide on December 18th. Production of the audiobook will begin after Christmas with a release date sometime in late January.

This is an exciting Christmas season!

Getting Closer to Release

Next Friday is the big day!

I’ve been working on Braving the Storms for over a year, writing, rewriting and editing all of the nearly 78,000 words. My wife has read each of the forty chapters at least twice. Micah Hansen worked with me to create the covers, while others have worked as critique partners and beta-readers. So, I’m really excited to say that the manuscript is done!

Braving the Storms by Kyle Pratt

Braving the Storms, is the third book of the Strengthen What Remains series. In the first book, Through Many Fires, nuclear terrorism strikes the nation’s capital and six other American cities. In the second book, A Time to Endure, society continues to unravel, and civil war threatens the divided and economically-crippled land.

Now a new and even more lethal problem emerges. A swift and deadly flu epidemic sweeps out of overcrowded FEMA camps and strikes the nation with horrific results. Caden Westmore struggles to keep his family and community safe, while others use the plague to advance their own military and political agendas. Caden must succeed, but how can he, when both the epidemic and chaos attack his hometown and family?

Now the harder job begins, getting the word out to readers about the new book. The paperback and ebook editions will be released worldwide on December 18th. Production of the audiobook will begin after Christmas with a release date sometime in late January.

Braving the Storms

First, the covers for the next book, Braving the Storms, Strengthen What Remains, book three, are out. I’m still writing the last third of the book, but beta-readers and editors are examining every line of the manuscript I’ve written. The graphic artist, Micah Hansen, has been busy creating covers for the paperback, eBook, and audiobook. You can see larger versions of the covers and read the first few chapters (with no spoilers) by clicking here. The book should be out at the end of October.

Every month in my free monthly newsletter I list the latest discounts for my books and audio books so that you, my readers, will receive the best price for any of my books, ebooks and audiobooks. All you need to do is subscribe.

A Time to Endure Released!

The headline is the story.

This morning A Time to Endure, Strengthen What Remains, book 2, was released in paperback, as an ebook on Kindle, Nook and Kobo and soon on iTunes.

The audiobook is in production and is scheduled for release next month.

As I write this A Time to Endure is already on the Amazon Genre Fiction-War bestseller list, climbing to number 100 this afternoon. The first book in the series, Through Many Fires, remains on the list at number 25.

The third and final (maybe) book in the series will be released in 2015.

Thank you to everyone who has bought the books!

The Sound of Final Duty

I’ve always thought that Final Duty, the novella that leads off my anthology would be a great audiobook.

In Final Duty, Lieutenant Amy Palmer returns to the Altair star system, onboard the reconnaissance ship Mirage, twenty years after the death of her father during the Battle of Altair. Almost immediately disaster strikes and Amy, along with the rest of the Mirage crew, must face the possibility of performing their final duties.

I imagined the story as more than an audiobook with at least a female and male voice actor and even some sound effects. It would then be a hybrid, or as it is called in the industry, a multi-cast, more than an audiobook, but less than a full radio play.

However, such a production would be expensive, the story is short, about 15,000 words, and I give away the ebook. It’s really hard to sell an expensive audiobook when you give away the ebook. So, although I thought it would be fun, it was a project that would probably never be done.

But then my sons decided to split the cost and give it to me as a Father’s Day present.

Wow!

We’ve been working on the project since before Father’s Day. We hired Brick Shop Audio, a New York City audiobook company to produce the project and two voice actors, Erin Mallon and Michael Braun. They all did a fantastic job of bringing our script to life.

The project is now complete and you can hear a sample on Audible here or on my website here.

Titan Audiobook Released!

Work began Titan Encounter audiobook in early March and now it is done.

We started by having Micah Hansen design a cover and moved on to listening to auditions. It didn’t take long to select actor Jeffrey Fellin to produce and narrate the novel. Jeffrey has extensive experience in both film and theater and the right voice for the book.

As Jeffrey completed the chapters my wife, Lorraine performed the first quality check, then beta-readers listened and finally it came back to me for a final QC.

There were delays and technical problems but by mid-May we turned the project over to Audible.com for final technical checks.

Titan Encounter is now available in paperback, Kindle, online in most other ereader formats and now as an audiobook on Audible.com. It will soon be available on iTunes.

The unabridged, five hour, Titan Encounter audiobook is available here on Audible.com.

We Have a Book Cover

The cover design for A Time to Endure has been approved and released.

Because of the enthusiastic response to Through Many Fires I immediately started writing the planned second book in the series. Titled, A Time to Endure, this next book is now my number one writing project. Click here to see a progress bar graph of the writing.

While I’m still busy with the manuscript, the graphic designer, Micah Hansen, has delivered the final cover design. The first book in the series, Through Many Fires, was done in shades of red and we decided to go with that theme for the second book. The stark background is not one particular scene in the book but suggests a tone of coming events. Click on the image to see a larger version.

A Time to Endure, book two in the Strengthen What Remains series, will be available on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, and the iTunes Bookstore, in paperback, on Kindle, and Nook and most other ereader formats when released later this year.

Titan Audiobook

Titan Encounter, my bestselling science fiction space adventure, will soon be available as an audiobook.

JeffreyFellin.jpg

The actor Jeffrey Fellin has agreed to produce and narrate the novel. Jeffrey has extensive experience in both film and theater, but is relatively new to book narration.  Currently he has only one other title on Audible, the zombie apocalypse novel Carrier. However, his voice was right for the character of Justin Garrett, the protagonist in Titan Encounter.

Micah Hansen, the graphic artist for all my books, has completed the audiobook version of the Titan Encounter cover. In addition to ten other book covers, Micah has designed covers for music CDs and logos for business.

The Titan audiobook is expected to be just over five hours long and is scheduled for release an April 5th on both Audible.com and iTunes.

The Best Laid Plans

Events in October did not move as quickly as I hoped. A few projects went well, but most will take more time. Here is the rundown.

The audiobook version of Through Many Fires is now available. I expected it to be released in October but it didn’t become available until two days ago. Still, I am happy that it is on the market.

All of my books are now available on Smashwords, the leading distributor of indie author books and they will be handling U.S. and international distribution outside of the Amazon network. However, I thought all of my books would be distributed via Smashwords to Barnes & Noble Nook and Kobo ereaders in October. It now appears they will roll out during November.

I didn’t plan to release my books on Google Play this month, but when my youngest son mentioned it we checked it out. Both Titan Encounter and Through Many Fires are now available on Google Play. Final Duty should be available soon.

Click here for more information about any of my books.

So it is clear now that many of the projects that began in October will culminate in November and then I can devote more time to writing the sequel to Through Many Fires.
