Beta Reader Guidelines

Thanks for agreeing to beta-read my latest novel. You are one of the first people to see parts of the manuscript.

Feel free to tell me things that you liked (I’m never going to say no to that), but what I really need from you is to find problems.

·         Indicate any place where you were confused about who spoke.

·         Mark any part of the story, or narrative, you didn’t understand or found confusing.

·         Tell me any place where you were tempted to skip ahead to the next page.

·         If you’re good with grammar, mark any issues you see. (This isn’t required. An editor will review everything; we’re just working to make that easier and quicker.)

The most helpful way to make these comments is something like this: “I got confused here because…” or “I don’t know why the character did this….” Don’t worry about offending me; I’d rather you tell me than hear it from a critic or reviewer.

Click the appropriate button at the top of the page to download an available manuscript for beta reading. Since you will probably read the document on a computer screen, I prefer that you utilize the Microsoft Word review function for your marks and comments. However, if you want to print it out, that’s okay, but it’s a tree killer.

I’ll need the manuscript back with your comments by the agreed-upon date so that I can make changes and forward it to the final editor.

Beta-readers are a huge help, but I know that I’m asking a lot of you. If, for any reason, you can’t do this, just say so. I understand.

However, if you do beta-read the complete manuscript, I’ll mention you in the acknowledgments and give you a signed copy of the first edition. Please review the book on Amazon, Goodreads, or your preferred platform.
