A Day on the Hobby Farm
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know I live on a small farm in the Pacific Northwest. It’s more of a hobby farm than a real agriculture production—but it takes a lot of work. Recently, we decided to clear an area of mostly dead trees. Two of the trees fell against my cuts and smashed nearby fences. Fortunately, only the fences were harmed, but the chickens squawked and complained. Then, we used a tractor to clear the bramble. Shown here, sitting in our yard.
I warned the driver that there was an old burn pit in the overgrown area, but I didn’t remember exactly where it was. Later, as the tractor sank into a pile of bramble, he realized he had found the pit. Shown here after he climbed out, unharmed.
How do you get a tractor out of a big hole? It took a heavy chain, a winch, and most of the morning. At least now we knew where to put all the bramble and dead wood. We pushed and dragged it into the hole and lit it on fire. After the fire burned down, and my wife and I have rested, we’ll start repairing the fences.
It’s just another summer of fun on the hobby farm.
