And advances in audiobooks
I’m using computer technology to create auto-narrated audiobooks. Race to Refuge is my first such audiobook and, it has already been released on Google Play Books.
Read MoreI started this blog on August 21, 2012, with the release of my first book, Titan Encounter. Most of those posts are now in what I call the “Early Blog.” I’m gradually updating their format and bringing them into this new journal. Back then the sole purpose of the blog was to promote my books, but gradually that changed.
That’s how it started but, over the years, I’ve mused about other things that are important to me, such as my family, my farm, rural life, and occasionally about politics and country. However, I try to limit the politics in this journal. If you want to know more about my political leaning go to The Conservative Alternative.

Read MoreI was sitting in my living room this morning when I heard a thud.
I felt confident that I’d find a heavy box just outside the door, and I did. The delivery service had dropped off a package containing thirty-five copies of Christmas in Time. Both my oldest son and I have stories in the anthology. My
Read MoreThere are two authors named Kyle Pratt
My wife received a call today from someone wanting to talk to Kyle Pratt, the author of The Scary Snow Day. Confused, she told them that, while Kyle Pratt is an author, The Scary Snow Day was not one of his books. When I got home she told me about the call and my son looked up the title on Amazon. It seems Kyle Derby Pratt is the author of The Scary Snow Day. My full name is Kyle Douglas Pratt so; we are both Kyle D. Pratt.
Read MoreThe audiobook of Through the Storms is now in production.
A few days ago I signed Sean Patrick Hopkins to narrate and produce the Through the Storm audiobook. Sean is a New York-based actor and Audible approved producer. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and his resume includes movies, television, off-Broadway, and regional theatre credits.
Read MoreToday at 4:00 pm (Pacific Time) I’ll be live on The Write Stuff radio program with Parker J. Cole of PJC Media and WLUV Detroit to discuss my latest novel Through the Storm.
In this latest novel, Neal Evans is in Nevada when he hears that an immense coronal mass ejection will soon slam into the Earth’s magnetosphere.
Read MoreThe worldwide release of my latest novel, Through the Storm, occurred this morning—while I slept actually.
Despite my sleeping through the moment, I am excited about this new story. The ebook was released today. Because of a few logistical problems, the paperback will come out later this week and the audiobook next month.
Read MoreIt usually surprises me when my local paper, The Chronicle, has a story that mentions me. I’m not complaining, they have written some really nice things about me. It’s just I rarely know when these articles will appear. I’ve sent them story ideas and even press releases and seen nothing in the paper and then suddenly something large and really nice like this full-page spread in the Life section will appear.
Read MoreI am a happy man.
Author rankings change constantly, and I tend to be more focused on writing and sales than my position on Amazon, but when I break into the top 10—well, I’ve just got to lean back and enjoy the moment.
Read MoreA friend of mine sent me a picture, and that gave me an idea.
My wife usually gets a worried look when I have ideas, but I think this is a good one. My friend, Jennifer, took a picture of her husband reading my book, Braving the Storms. An idea came to me as I looked at the picture.
Read MoreI just finished being interviewed by Simon Whistler of the Rocking Self-Publishing Podcast.
To paraphrase how Simon starts each program, he interviews successful self-published authors so that his listeners can learn and follow. When I discovered the Rocking Self-Publishing Podcast a couple of years ago, I went back to the first show and listened to every episode.
Read MoreI received a surprising email recently.
Since I started, I’ve felt that the best way to promote and sell my books was online. While I’m thrilled when it occurs, I put little effort into getting them into stores and libraries. Still, over time, they have appeared in several brick and mortar establishments like the Strand in New York City, Powell’s in Portland, and my local store, Book N Brush.
Read MoreMarketing and publicity are part of being an author but, like most writers, I avoid them.
I’d rather stay in my office typing my next story than go to a party or even most meetings with other authors. It’s not as if I hate people. I don’t but, like most writers, I’m an introvert.
Read MoreLast night I sat at the dining room table and signed books.
Earlier, I had made a list of 39 people that would be receiving one, or more, of my novels. When all the books came from the printer on the same day I decided to just sit down, sign, and mail them all.
