Is violence the new ballot box? Is murder now the cost of speaking out? Americans must not let it be.

As I write these words, Charlie Kirk—a Christian husband with two small children and founder of Turning Point USA—has just been assassinated. Charlie was known for using logic, facts, and persuasion to challenge the closed minds of college professors and their students. That boldness probably cost him his life. I never met the man, but like many, I followed him and his organization on social media. I admired his courage, wit, and rhetorical skill.

Transforming the Writer’s World

The older I get, the more I marvel at technological advances. I wasn’t even two years old when, in October of 1957, the Soviets launched a small satellite and started the race to space. Now we’ve landed astronauts on the moon, and about 10,000 satellites orbit above us. However, for me, the greatest leap forward in technology is the Internet. Without it, I wouldn’t be an author or business owner, and my latest project would be impossible.

You may have heard that Mount Rainier has been rumbling with quakes recently. Well, it’s true and I live just fifty miles south of Rainier and thirty-two miles north of Mount St. Helens. A Day on the Hobby Farm

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know I live on a small farm in the Pacific Northwest. It’s more of a hobby farm than a real agricultural endeavor, but it takes a lot of work. Recently, we decided to clear an area of mostly dead trees. Two of the trees fell against my cuts and smashed nearby fences. Fortunately, only the fences were harmed, but the chickens squawked and complained.

Animated Book Cover

The idea popped into my head recently that with the advent of artificial intelligence, why not have an animated book cover? Of course, it couldn’t be on the actual book cover—not yet, anyway—but it seemed like a fun way to promote a novel. So, I tried to create one using several different A.I. platforms. I could say the tools failed, but in truth, I think we both did.

Much Delayed New Release

A few years ago, doctors discovered that I had an autoimmune disorder. Treatment for it stifled my writing and delayed the third book of the Solar Storms Saga. However, doctors have been able to treat the illness and that has allowed me to resume writing. My youngest son recently purchased a Tesla Model Y. The other day, he said “Let’s go for a drive.” This was my first time ever touching a Tesla and I had trouble just getting in. For those of you who have never been around the car, the door handles are flush with the body of the vehicle. You press them and they pop out.

The View from my Doorstep

The winter has been mild, and that often distracts me from my writing.

This morning, as I ate breakfast, several deer wandered into the front yard. At first, I saw only two and informed my wife. If we have apples, she usually tosses one or two to the deer. I got up and looked. There were now six in the yard. I retrieved my camera, and by the time I stepped out to take a picture, there were eight deer.

My Other Job

I’m retired but I have several jobs that keep me busy.

I Finally Did It

After years of procrastination, I can finally check this off my bucket list. Yesterday, I passed the amateur radio technician class test. With a bit of luck, I will soon be a ham radio operator. I say “bit of luck” because I’m dealing with the government. My call sign must appear in the Federal Communications Commission license database before I can go on the air. These guys are like the DMV of the airwaves so, who knows how long it will take?

Morning at the Fair

Just as it was opening this morning, Lorraine and I arrived at the Southwest Washington Fair entrance. It had been hot all week and we had talked about not going, but this morning there was a touch of autumn coolness in the air. So, we jumped in our car and traveled to the cities. I said cities because the fairgrounds are located between the two biggest cities in the county, Centralia with a population of 18,500, and Chehalis with a population of 8,000. I often joke about going to the big city for something, but I like that I live in rural America.
